Hi Mike and welcome; I just wanted to tell you that the tank comes off with the petcock still installed, just tilt the tank to the left while pulling back and lifting up, it's tight, but it will come off without damage. I have done it several times. But that is one problem with the Savage, just about everything you do with the upper motor requires taking off the tank. If you are not sure of the 600 mile service, get a manual or check the forum and do it, it is important because it will prevent future oil leaks and blown head gasket, and correct adjustment of the decompressor and valves will be easier on the electric starter.
